College-Bound High School Senior's Monthly Calendar

 

September October November
  • Create an information file for each college on your list.
  • Get off to a good academic start
  • Plan college visits and interviews (remember to send a thank you letter to each college you visit)
  • Make a list of test names, registration deadlines, test dates, college application deadlines.
  • Make an appointment to meet with your guidance counselor
  • Work on your college essays
  • Oswego County Counselors Annual College Day held at Oswego County BOCES
  • Attend a financial Aid Night at your High School 
  • Send at least one college application by Thanksgiving
  • Keep college files up to date with current information
December  January February
  • Finish all draft applications and essays- review with your guidance counselor, teacher and/or parent for accuracy and content
  • Mail completed applications to colleges
  • Ask teachers for recommendation letters (and provide them with an envelope)
  • Pick up a financial aid form (FAFSA) from your guidance counselor's office (or download FAFSA from the web)
  • NYS TAP will be processed by FAFSA

 

  • Complete and file the financial aid form ( FAFSA) after the 1st of January 
  • Follow up on college applications sent.  Make sure they have all information needed.
  • Ensure that all colleges you have applied to have received the results of your FAFSA
  • Review Student Aid Report
March  April May
  • Watch your mail for college responses
  • Send any new materials to colleges which may help their admissions decision
  • Review Student Aid Report
  • Responses from colleges to which you applied should have arrived
  • Choose the college you wish to attend
  • Write "Thanks, but I've selected another college" letter to colleges you will not attend
  • If you are on a waiting list, write a "pleading letter" and send any supporting materials you can - ask teachers and coaches for assistance
  • Review financial aid packages
  • Take the Advance Placement (AP) Exams
  • Complete dormitory forms, if necessary
  • Review financial aid packages.
June July August
  • Graduation -Congratulations!
  • Plan college skill building, if necessaary
  • Make sure your college bill is paid for the first semester
  • Possible summer job - remember, your books will cost about $500 each semester of college
  • Plan for things you will need to take to college to make your dorm room livable
  • Enjoy your summer - you've worked hard, you deserve it!!

 

  • Prepare for college
  • Pack for your move to the dorm
  • Contact your roommates (Colleges usually provide names, addresses, phone numbers and email address, just for this purpose)
  • Make the big move and start your new life as a college student!
