It is the policy of the Board of Education, pursuant to the National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act of 1996, that: A. A District Wellness Committee and School Wellness Committees will be established for each of the school district’s eight schools. 1. The Wellness Committees will be comprised of individuals representing the following constituency groups: teachers, parents, students, and community members. Others as determined by the respective committee. 2. The role of the Wellness Committees will be to develop guidelines to direct the implementation of the Local Wellness Policy, and promote and evaluate the implementation of such guidelines. 3. The District Wellness Committee will develop guidelines in the following areas: a. Nutrition guidelines for all foods and beverages available on school campuses during the school day. b. The food and beverages sold in vending machines, snack bars, school stores, and concession stands. c. The refreshments served at parties, celebrations, and meetings during the school day. B. Nutrition Guidelines will be developed for all foods and beverages available on school campuses during the school day. C. Nutritional education shall be integrated into the district health curriculum at all levels consistent with the State’s health education standards. The curriculum shall include the following goals: 1. Increase student’s nutritional knowledge including, but not limited to, the benefits of healthy eating, essential nutrition, weight management, safe food preparation, handling and storage. 2. Increased students understanding of food labels, nutritional information, and misinformation as well as commercial food advertising. D. The District Wellness Committee will develop guidelines to promote the benefits of physical activity within the school on a regular basis to meet the following goals: 1. Students to be provided with opportunities for physical activity during the school day through physical education (PE) classes, and daily recess periods for elementary school students. 2. Students to be provided with opportunities for physical activities through a range of before and/or after school programs including, but not limited to, intramurals, interscholastic athletics, and physical activity clubs. 3. School encourages parents and guardians to support their children’s participation in physical activity, to physically active role models, and to include physical activity in family events.
