COMPLAINTS ABOUT CURRICULA OR INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The suitability of a particular curriculum, book or other instructional material (including library resources) may be challenged by a parent for use with their child(ren). Such challenge shall be handled as follows:

1.                  The complaint must be committed to writing and sent to the Superintendent of Schools.

2.         The Superintendent shall designate a Review Committee to investigate the material in question. The superintendent shall designate the Chairperson of the Review Committee. The Superintendent may opt to remove the challenged material from the student whose parent is making the challenge during the pendency of the review. The Review Committee will be comprised of at least the following representatives

Elementary Level

Secondary Level
Assistant Superintendent  Assistant Superintendent
Curriculum Consultant--Chair  Subject Area Specialist
Parent (other than complainant) Parent (other than complainant)
Classroom Teacher Classroom Teacher
Principal  Principal or Assistant Principal
Member of the Community  Member of the Community
Library Media Specialist Library Media Specialist

3.                  The review committee shall complete their charge within a maximum of 21 days. The report of the committee shall be sent to the Superintendent for action.

4.         The Superintendent shall render a decision regarding the material in question within a maximum of 14 days.

5.                  If rendered the Superintendent will report both the complaint and resolution to the Board of Education.

If the parent initiating the challenge does not agree with the Superintendent's decision, the matter shall be referred to the Board of Education for consideration. The Board of Education shall deny the right of a parent to determine what material(s) may be used for students other than their own child(ren).
