PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AT BOARD MEETINGS |

The Board of Education recognizes its responsibility to hear and respond to public comments and therefore encourages public participation at Board meetings. There will be a specific agenda item at each Regular Board meeting to provide an opportunity to address the Board. A reasonable period of time, not to exceed 30 minutes (which may be waived by a majority vote of the Board) shall be set aside during the first part of each Regular Board meeting during which the community residents, school personnel, and school students may openly express themselves directly to the Board. Persons wishing to speak must first, prior to the meeting, complete the Speaker Card indicating name, any organization they may be representing at the meeting, and the topic they wish to discuss. Comments should be kept as brief as possible and relate to school matters. Persons who wish to address the Board about confidential matters (such as matters involving particular employees or students) should refrain from making such comments during the public part of a Board meeting. Persons having such concerns should submit them to the Superintendent of Schools in writing. This may include a request to address the Board in executive session. The Board, in its discretion, may grant or deny such a request. The President is responsible for the orderly conduct of the meeting and shall rule on such matters as the time to be allowed for public discussion, the appropriateness of the subject being presented, and suitability of the time for such a presentation. The Board as a whole shall have the final decision in determining the appropriateness of all such rulings. A reasonable effort will be made to respond to inquiries, public requests for information, and in regard to appropriate comments, no later than the next scheduled Regular Board of Education meeting. |
