SMART
(Science/ Mathematics Applied Resources for Teaching)

A Cooperative Partnership Partnership between Schools and Industries
Validated by the New York State Education Department
Focus:
- Consistent with the math and science curriculum as put forth by the Central Square
Central School District.
- Improves student attitudes towards science and mathematics.
- Increases community and parental involvement for improved math and science instruction.
- Helps children understand the linkage between work and school.
Project SMART is a cooperation between schools and businesses which provide activities that are centered around a trip to a local business or industry to demonstrate how school science and math are applied to real life.
Field trips to tour a local business takes students into parts of the business where the public usually does not go. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to see where math and science are used in that business.
Classroom study is a major focus of Project SMART. The tour is specifically designed for the grade level to coincide with the math/science skills being taught in the classroom.
These interdisciplinary units of study have applications in math, science, technology, English Language Arts, social studies, and health.
After the tour of the business, teachers collect data from students to evaluate students' learning.
All activities are continual, rather than culminating.
Project SMART models can be adapted to any area business or industry.
If interested, please check with your teacher to find out how you can become involved in Project SMART!
